50 More Evangelism Tips

#39: Cleverness is not a prerequisite for soul-winning (1 Cor. 2:1).

Christians are tasked with sharing the gospel as they are going (Matt. 28:18-20). Though we all know we should be engaged in evangelism, sometimes it can be overwhelming and we might not know where to start. Here are 50 more evangelism tips from the Bible and my experience. 1. Get to know your neighbors and people in your community. You never know where it’ll lead (Luke 19:5-10; Phil. 1:12-13; 4:22).

2. If we expect to fail we probably will (Phil. 4:8).

3. Some of the people we overlook may be the most receptive (Matt. 9:9-13).

4. Jesus was interested in genuine conversations with people that he could turn spiritual (John 4:7-10). Learn to love talking with people and always ask people what you can pray for them about. Even atheists have prayer requests.  

5. Keep a list of prospects on a regular prayer list. This lets God know that you’re serious and reminds you of how serious it is too (1 Tim. 2:1).

6. Focus on what you can do and not on what you can’t do (Mark 14:8).

7. There are a lot of lost people in the church building every Sunday and Wednesday. Don’t overlook them (Jn. 4:35).

8. Ask yourself: “What does this person need to know to get in Christ?” and then teach them that. Leave the rest for afterward (Acts 4:12).

9. Learn more about evangelism from the book of Acts than from the opinions of modern man (Acts 1:8).

10. When people say they don’t want to talk about spiritual things with you respect their wishes but keep praying for them (Matt. 7:6; Acts 18:6).

11. Here are some good conversation starters to keep filed away: What do you think happens to people when they die? What do you think our purpose in life is? What do you think about Jesus Christ? Have you ever read the Bible? If you could ask God anything what would you ask?

12. Learn to do personal studies with a partner (Luke 10:1).

13. God sees your efforts even if nobody else does (1 Cor. 15:58).

14. You may not be comfortable with teaching, but you could help with retention (Col. 4:12).

15. The early church didn’t leave evangelism to the “professionals” (i.e., the Apostles Acts 8:4).

16. Give God the glory, take none for yourself (Ps. 115:1).

17. There is no “church of Christ” doctrine. Avoid sectarian terminology and just teach the truth about Jesus and His Kingdom (John 14:6).

18. Confessing that Jesus is Lord is a lifetime thing, not a one-time thing (Matt. 10:32-33; Rom. 10:9-10).

19. Don’t waste time arguing about things that don’t really matter (Titus 3:9).

20. Building relationships is important but you don’t have to be BFFs before you get to the gospel (1 Cor. 2:1-5).

21. View yourself as a missionary wherever you are and wherever you live (1 Cor. 9:16).

22. Make it all about Jesus and not about you or them (2 Cor. 4:5).

23. We struggle with being ashamed and embarrassed about our Christianity more than we might care to admit (Rom. 1:16).

24. Psalm 66:16 is a great summary of evangelism.

25. Agree with someone as much as you can (establish common ground) and then get to your differences (Acts 26:27).

26. Be willing to say “I don’t know.” None of us knows everything (Ps. 147:5).

27. Talk to other evangelistic people and learn from them (1 Cor. 11:1).

28. Reading the Bible regularly for ourselves will strengthen our faith and will aid us greatly in sharing our faith (2 Tim. 2:15; 2 Pet. 3:18).

29. Just ask people to study or come to worship. The worst they can say is no (Acts 8:30-31).

30. Hospitality is one of the forgotten keys in modern evangelism (Luke 15:1-2).

31. Sometimes it takes “many other words” to stir a heart to obedience (Acts 2:40).

32. Jesus did not command the impossible (Matt. 28:18-20; 1 John 5:3).

33. Don’t let the news tell you how to view your neighbor; that’s God’s job (Matt. 22:37-40).

34. Evangelism can include suffering. This shouldn’t surprise us (Acts 14:22; Phil. 1:29; 2 Tim. 3:12). 

35. Saying that all people from a certain denomination or religious group believe “x” is not wise and most times not true. 

36. There will always be mixed responses to the gospel (Acts 17:32).

37. Possessing and modeling the fruit of the Spirit is one of the most important things Christians can do while trying to share the gospel (Gal. 5:22-23).

38. Most people have never seriously read the Bible for themselves so go slow and don’t overload them with information.

40. How you respond to people after they reject you may be more important to them than anything else you say (2 Tim. 2:24-26). 

41. Know the gospel well yourself before trying to share it with others (John 8:31-32).

42. If you like arguing or always being right, just remember that’s probably a weakness and not a strength in evangelism (1 Tim. 6:3-5).

43. Finding out someone’s religious background is helpful in learning where to start the conversation (Acts 17:22-23).

44. If you are studying with somebody who says they’ve already been baptized, ask questions about their baptism, like what they did and why (Acts 19:1-6).

45. If someone believes they genuinely obeyed the gospel even if you’re unsure they did, there’s nothing you can do to force them to think otherwise. Learn to be ok with letting God be God (2 Cor. 5:10).

46. All the materials and studies that are true to the Bible work when we use them — none of them are perfect, but they all have strengths and weaknesses (2 Tim. 4:2).

47. Talking about evangelism is easier than doing evangelism (Jas. 1:22-25).

48. Inviting someone to Bible class may be more effective in the long run than inviting them to a Sunday worship service.

49. Work hard to get prejudice and partiality out of your heart (Jas. 2:1).

50. People are shaped by the stories they believe. Christians have the best story to tell, and ours is true (Rom. 1:16-17)!
